Birth of Greeno

Deep in the forests of Montana, lurks a cold-blooded killer. A killer who hasn't made headlines or been featured on 48 Hours. The body count is at 5.1 million in Montana (33 million nationwide) and rising. And, while this mass murderer has been spotted and identified, it continues to elude capture. Introducing Montana's Public Enemy Number One: the Mountain Pine Beetle.

Measuring in at less than a quarter of an inch, this little monster, also known as Dendroctonus Ponderosae, feeds on massive amounts of western pine trees. His preferred targets? Weak and aging trees.

The beetle's MO is to burrow into the phloem layer of trees, robbing them of water and nutrients. Sooner than later, the tree's needles turn red and the tree dies. The beetle and his cohorts move on, and the cycle continues until entire forests expire.

Why are they here? Well, they've always been here, kept in check by deep winter freezes. But global warming combined with dense forests caused by decades of fire prevention has created the perfect environment for outbreaks to go from endemic to current epidemic proportions.

Out of the millions of dead, red trees, a green beacon of light has appeared.

Introducing Greeno: a company committed to a greener way of life. Based in pristine Greenough, Montana, Greeno was born out of the need to battle the local pine beetle infestation. By logging the beetle-killed trees and protecting the survivors in PEFC-certified forests, Greeno promotes forest health and safety in Montana.

In an odd twist of fate, the Mountain Pine Beetle leaves an attractive footprint: a unique silvery blue stain. Greeno is taking the pine beetle's blue-stained calling card and turning it into beautifully designed flooring, paneling, crown molding, baseboards and window and door casings. Just as strong as non-stained lumber, harvested trees can now live on in new construction, re-models, community building projects, furniture and more. Blue is the new green.

Greeno - we're not just about beautiful wood, we're about life, land and the pursuit of happiness.
